đź‘‹ Hi! I'm Brian Feroldi...

I am a financial educator, YouTuber, and author. I have been intensely interested in money, personal finance, and investing ever since I graduated from college.

I started investing in 2004. In the beginning, I had no idea what I was doing and got my teeth kicked in. My returns improved dramatically as my experience and knowledge about the stock market grew.

My career mission statement is “to demystify the stock market.” I love to help other people do better with their investments. I have written over 3,000 articles on stocks, investing, and personal finance for the Motley Fool.

In 2022, my best-selling book "Why Does The Stock Market Go Up?" was published. It was written to explain how the stock market works in plain English.

I live in New England with my wife and three kids.

My Book:

Why does the stock market go up?

Have you ever heard a headline like “The Dow fell 300 points today” and had no idea what it meant? You’re not alone!

The vast majority of us aren’t taught anything about the stock market or investing while we were in school.

That’s a shame because the stock market is the greatest wealth-creation machine of all time, yet most of us have no clue about what it is, how it works, or how to start investing.

In “Why Does The Stock Market Go Up?”, I demystify the stock market by explaining what it is and how it works using easy-to-understand terms and simple examples.

This book was designed to arm ordinary people with the knowledge that they need to build extraordinary wealth.

Why did I write this book?

As an avid investor, nothing makes me more frustrated than when I see ads for financial services that make it sound like this is all “unknowable” or “complicated.” Really, the stock market isn’t all that complicated, but for generations that has been the message to everyone. And, none of this is really taught in school.
If you want to understand investing in stocks and the stock market, Brian Feroldi clearly explains both in his brilliant new book. And you should want to. The stock market is the single most powerful wealth-building tool yet invented. But if you don't understand it, it will leave you bleeding by the side of the road.

My tool: Stock Simplifier

Researching a stock properly takes hours. Read the filings, dig through the financials, judge the moat, size up management, weigh the risks, run a valuation.

Almost nobody has that kind of time. So most investors buy on a headline and hope it works out.

I built Stock Simplifier to fix that. It pulls the financial data, does the heavy research, and lays out everything you need to judge a company in one place: business quality, moat, growth, management, risk, and valuation.

You still make the call. We do the hard work, you score the stock.

Know what you own before you buy it.

Know what you own before you buy it

Every public company moves through a five-stage lifecycle. Where a company sits changes what you should expect from it, and how you value it. A young company plowing every dollar into growth should be judged nothing like a mature one handing cash back to shareholders.
The five phases of a company. Revenue climbs across Startup, Hyper Growth, Operating Leverage and Capital Return, then rolls over in Decline. Profit starts below zero, bottoms out as losses peak in Hyper Growth, breaks even entering Operating Leverage, and fades in Decline. Dividends and buybacks begin in Capital Return. The valuation multiples that fit each phase: forward price to sales and trailing price to gross profit in Startup and Hyper Growth; forward price to earnings and forward price to free cash flow in Operating Leverage; trailing price to earnings and trailing price to free cash flow in Capital Return; forward price to earnings and forward price to free cash flow in Decline.
1

Startup

Burning cash to build the product. Revenue is small and losses deepen as it invests to grow.
2

Hyper Growth

Revenue accelerates fast. Losses peak, then start shrinking as the model proves out toward breakeven.
3

Operating Leverage

Profits emerge. Revenue now outpaces costs, so margins expand and cash flow turns positive.
4

Capital Return

Mature and cash-rich. Growth slows, so it returns cash through dividends and buybacks.
5

Decline

The business loses ground. Revenue and profits fade as demand or competitiveness erodes.
1

Why the phase matters

A hyper-growth stock and a capital-return stock deserve completely different expectations. Misjudge the phase and you misjudge the whole company, from what “good” looks like to how much it's worth.
2

What to watch in each

Early on, revenue growth is the story. In the middle, it's margins and profit. Later, it's how much cash comes back to you. The right metric changes as the phase changes.
